Mark Downey targets Berlin Six Day race wins

On top of the world after a fantastic 2017, Mark Downey gets the new season underway at the Berlin Six Day.

The dual road and track international is hoping to be competing for victories next week.

And his year has already begun very well. Downey was named in the Northern Ireland team for the Commonwealth Games in Australia in April.

As a result, he’s on a high as he faces into the Berlin Six Day with racing partner Felix English.

“We’ve done London and that was our first stepping stone,” he said of the pair’s 6th place finish last year.

“We'd never quite got the win which we hoped we would get during the week but we were always knocking on the door.

“We were fighting in the races and we enjoyed what was going on. We were very aggressive and always up towards the front. And I think the crowd really enjoyed that as well.

“Hopefully now we’re in good shape for Berlin and we can get those couple of wins," added the 21 year old Irish cyclist.

“We’d raced all those guys before but this time in London it was more of a relaxed situation.

“We got to know everybody and it was a different, nice feeling than going to a World Cup or World Championships.

“It wasn’t as extreme and a really enjoyable week. It reminds why you ride your bike with the fans there cheering. And just being able to enjoy what you do.”

Furthermore, Downey - who rides for Team Wiggins this year - said race wins in Berlin was the aim. It runs from January 25th to 30th.

“The race win is the target; that would definitely be a goal of ours.  And that’s what we’d said once we finished in London.

“The fans love to see hard, aggressive racing. That’s what we like to do and as the Paddies, we like to get stuck in to it all.

“The whole attitude we have is do or die, that’s the way it works for us.”
