With small cameras now in use by riders in Irish races - affixed to handlebars, seat posts or helmets - Cycling Ireland has said those involved can be disqualified.
While the use of on-board cameras is being pioneered by the UCI as a means of bringing fans inside the pro peloton, Cycling Ireland has issued a warning to riders on the home scene against doing the same.
The federation said it had become aware of riders in the domestic bunches using “video recording devices”.
As a result it felt it was timely to remind them of the UCI regulations on the issue.
It quoted the world governing body’s equipment regulations – covering mounted items, such as cameras - which clearly set out restrictions in the area.
The UCI regulation reads: “Except in mountain bike racing, no technical innovation regarding anything used, worn or carried by any rider or license holder during a competition (bicycles, equipment mounted on them, accessories, helmets, clothing, means of communication, etc) may be used until approved by the UCI.
“Requests for approval shall be submitted to the UCI, accompanied by all necessary documentation.”

The tiny cameras are very easy to use and often produce great footage. Let's hope the UCI permits them more easily in the future.
The Cycling Ireland statement added that at present video recording devices were regarded by the UCI as “technical innovations” because they had yet to be formally approved and accepted by the world body.
“However the UCI is carrying out a series of trials and it is anticipated that going forward there may be a relaxation in the above regulations,” Cycling Ireland said.
“But until such time riders using such devices will be liable to sanction under the Cycling Ireland technical regulations.”
Article 2 of Cycling Ireland’s scale of penalties states that “if a rider presents to the start with a bicycle not conforming to regulations, the permission to start will be withheld and if a rider uses a bicycle during a road race that does not conform to regulations, the penalty for that rider is disqualification.”
You have been warned!
