Top men pull clear in rankings as nearly 300 riders now A1s

Last year’s top ranked Cycling Ireland A1 rider, Matteo Cigala, is leading the 2018 rankings as the season enters into its final couple of months.

Cigala leads with 189 points from Lindsay Watson of Powerhouse Sport who has 148 points.

Conor Hennebry (Viner-Caremark-Pactimo) is 3rd, with 139 points.

And after a brilliant ride at the National Road Championships last weekend, where he took elite silver and U23 gold, Darnell Moore is now 4th.

The Caldwell Cycles Omagh rider has 134 points for his efforts to date this season.

Rankings leader Cigala has stepped up to Continental level in recent weeks with the UK-based Holdsworth team.

He has won two races this year; the season-opening Lacey Cup in Co Kerry and the final stage of the Tour of Ulster.

His consistency has been remarkable, especially during May when he scored a huge number of points at the Tour of Ulster and Rás Tailteann.

He claimed points on six of the eight Rás stages; his tally for that week alone reaching 80.

The nearest man to Cigala in the A1 rankings; Lindsay Watson has taken one win so far this year. He was best in the East Tyrone GP.

He is enjoying an excellent season, a fact underlined by his 9th place in the elite men’s race at the nationals in Sligo on Sunday.

Watson has collected points on no fewer than 20 occasions since the start of the campaign. Incredibly, In nine of his 20 scoring races he has been on the podium; the winner once, 2nd four times and 3rd four times. He also placed on two Rás stages; 6th on stage 7 and 7th on the final stage.

While Hennebry hasn’t scored as many points as Cigala or Watson, his record this season boasts no fewer than six wins.

He won Rás Naomh Finian and then a stage and the overall at Kerry Group Rás Mumhan. That was followed by John Drumm Cup victory and wins in the Donamon GP and Meath GP.

Of the 15 occasions he has taken points this year, 12 have been podium placings, including his wins.

Moore has taken two wins this year; the Waller Cup and Tour of Ards. And he has been on the podium a total of 10 times; 2nd three times and 3rd five times.

According to the rankings, there now 272 A1 riders in the country.
