Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Victorious) has taken the first win by an Italian in Paris-Roubaix since Andrea Tafi triumphed for Mapei-QuickStep way back in 1999.
While another Italian - Gianni Moscon (Ineos Grenadiers) - led the race solo for a long time, a puncture and a crash in the last hour of racing helped his challenge fade, before he was caught and dropped by a chasing group.
In that group were just three riders; Colbrelli, Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) and first-year pro rider Florian Vermeersch, a 22-year-old Belgian with (Lotto Soudal).
While Vermeersch went early in the sprint on the famous Roubaix concrete velodrome, Colbrelli was too fast; winning the day from the young Belgian, with Van der Poel in a disappointing 3rd.
Moscon held on for 4th place, some 44 seconds. Then came a group of seven riders, some 1:16 off the winner. The sprint for 5th place from that group was won by Yves Lampaert (Deceuninck-QuickStep) from Christophe Laporte (Cofidis, Solutions Crédits) and Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma)
