Watch this amazing attack where Bob Jungles hit speeds of over 100kph despite making his move on what was only a short descent. He was using a specially fitted 55-tooth chainring.

It's by no means uncommon for pro riders, and even amateurs, to hit speeds of 100kph or more; though you don't do it every day!

But when a rider achieves it on a relatively short descent, it's a lot more impressive.

And that was the case with Etixx-Quickstep’s Bob Jungels on the opening stage at the Tour of Oman yesterday, as the clip above reveals.

Jungels crested the second of two late climbs with a select group and attacked them with just over 2km remaining; speeding away to take the stage and race lead as some of the best riders in the world could only look on.

Using his excellent TT skills and his massive gear, he averaged 350Watts for the final 3km and reached 101.22kph.

His average power was 187 Watts, with a maximum output of 1,321 Watts on the 145km stage from the Oman Exhibition Center to Al Bustan.

He powered away to win by six seconds from Serge Pauwels (Dimension Data), with French climber Romain Bardet (AG2R-La Mondiale) in 3rd two seconds further back.

The rest of the select group was on his wheel, with Jungels’ team mate Dan Martin finishing 11th on the same time as Bardet.
