Dan Martin has lost a huge amount of time in the mountains at Paris-Nice. His hopes of making the final podium again this year have been wiped out on the road today.

Dan Martin loses time on Paris-Nice stage 6

A man whose consistency has been bullet-proof in recent seasons, Dan Martin suffered a rare implosion today at Paris-Nice.

The race blew to pieces on the 198km road between Sisteron to Vence. And for once Martin was closer to the back of the field than the front.

At the time of writing the full details of his stage was not available.

However, the Irishman suffered a mechanical between the cat 2 Cote de Gourdon and the last climb of the day, the Cote de la Colle sur Loup.

He last contact with the yellow jersey group. As a result, he would come home a whopping 9:36 down on stage winner Rudy Mollard (Groupama-FDJ).

The only other Irishman in the race, Nicolas Roche (BMC) was 35th. He finished in a group 3:36 down.

Taking the fourth victory for France in the six stages so far, Mollard finished just two seconds ahead of the 15-man yellow jersey group.

Tim Wellens (Lotto-Soudal) was 2nd, with the ever-ready Julian Alaphilippe (QuickStep) in 3rd place.

Race leader Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) was also in that group. As a result, he retains his race lead with two stages to go.

His nearest challenger and biggest rival Wout Poels (Team Sky) crashed late in the stage.

Sanchez had punctured on the descent of the penultimate climb and was forced to change bikes with Omar Fraile.

But he made it back into the peloton and later climbed well on the final ascent.

Dan Martin suffered his mechanical around the same time as Sanchez. Furthermore, the racing was on at the front of the field and so he lost ground quickly.

It was not immediately clear if Martin was forced to wait for a long time for assistance.

More to follow.
