Video: Geraint Thomas “won’t forget” Romain Bardet Dauphiné incident

Posted on: June 11th, 2018

Geraint Thomas went up to Romain Bardet in the group and gave him a piece of his mind. And he said after the Dauphiné that he wouldn’t forget what happened. Thomas said other riders had told him Ag2r La Mondiale appeared to ride harder when he punctured; a major no, no in pro cycling.

Geraint Thomas was not happy with Romain Bardet

Having overcome a crash in the prologue TT and then two punctures on yesterday’s final stage Geraint Thomas still ran out the winner of Critérium du Dauphiné.

However, after the final stage he said he wasn’t happy; AG2R La Mondiale the focus of his ire.

He didn’t name them, but it was clear from the footage during the stage that he was referring to the French squad.

Thomas said other riders in the favourites group, including Dan Martin, told him the team of Romain Bardet appeared to ride faster when he punctured.

When he flatted coming off the Col des Saisies there was more than 40km remaining in the stage.

And while Thomas got a wheel from team mate Gianni Moscon and got going again, he was almost a minute behind.

He got back and said when he learned what had happened, he let the rider involved know he was unhappy.

The overhead clip, in the stage highlights video below, clearly identifies Bardet as the rider he had words with.

“When we finally got back, after a bit of a chase, a few of the guys; Yates, Dan Martin and Jungels said the same thing.

“That they saw it. Someone went on radio and they started sprinting. I just went up to them and said thanks for that.

“I’m not one to hold a grudge but I also certainly won’t forget it.”

Bardet defended himself, saying his domestiques were already riding when Thomas punctured and was forced into a 15km chase.

“We were in the process of riding. And we weren’t going to stop at the first puncture,” said Bardet, who ended the stage and the race overall in 3rd place.

“That’s racing. We didn’t accelerate. We maintained the same pace. I explained to Geraint that, of course, we’re riding hard to win the stage.”

The episode brought back memories of Chris Froome (Team Sky) last year trying to encourage others to attack race leader Richie Porte (BMC).

On that occasion Porte, who lost the race, expressed his annoyance, which you can recall by following this link.
