Irish rider Dan Martin said the classics hit him hard and he felt it in the aftermath. But his condition has come around even in the last few days, he says.
Dan Martin has said he felt tired after his classics campaign but felt he was coming around now.
The Irish rider felt strong on today’s TT at the Tour de Romandie; his 8th place on the day supporting that view.
After his Ardennes classics week, during which he punctured out of the select group in Liege-Bastogne-Liege, his condition had been up and down.
And though he felt rough when he woke up for stage 2 in Switzerland yesterday, today’s uphill 9.9km TT brought a fresher feel.
“I knew it was a stage that could be very good for me,” said Dan Martin still gasping for breath after his effort.
“But after Liege and the classics; phew, I didn’t feel so good this morning, you know.
“Yesterday I was really bad. But in the time trial (today) I felt really good.
“There was quite a strong headwind on some parts, which took me by surprise, but I think I did good with pacing.
“I’d a bit of a bad moment in the middle. But, you know; I did the maximum and that’s all you can do.”
Egan Bernal continued what looks like rapid journey to the top of pro cycling by winning the TT.
The Team Sky man, who is aged just 21 years, posted a time of 25:10. That was four seconds faster than race leader Primoz Roglic (LottoNL-Jumbo).
Richie Porte of BMC was 3rd, some 18 seconds off Bernal; the latter now 2nd overall to Roglic.
Dan Martin lost 1:28 on the day. He now jumps from 21st overall this morning to 8th in general classification.
With a hilly stage tomorrow and feeling he is coming around, Dan Martin will look to get a result tomorrow if he can.
