With the dust settled on stage 3 of the Quanta Capital Junior Tour of Ireland, it appears the number of riders who can realistically win this race, or finishing on the final podium, is now much smaller than it was this morning.
About 100km into today’s 123km to Kilfenora, the riders tackled the climb of Castle Hill, with the US Hot Tubes team taking a particular interest in keeping the pace really hill into the base of that climb.
And by the time the four or five minutes of climbing was done, the race was blown to pieces and a 19-man group had formed at the front. It was soon trimmed back to just 11 as the strongest men up front made the cut.
Three Irish riders into the front group, with eight visitors from abroad. A chase group of 30 was 1:04 back and the the best of the rest lost almost four minutes.
Making the cut for Ireland were: Toby Sweetman of Team Ireland and the Cycling Leinster duo of Fionn Killeen and stage 2 winner Matthew Walls. Sweetman won the stage in a sprint from the group.
The yellow jersey changed hands today, passing from one Hot Tubes rider to another; stage 1 winner Luca Bednarek taking it from yesterday’s victor, Jack Ray. They are both equal on time, with Walls just one second back in 3rd place overall.
Sweetman is now 5th overall at four seconds and Killeen – who has ridden a really impressive race so far – is up to 9th, just 14 seconds down.
