The junior riders were fastest at the Leinster Hill Climb Championships in Co Louth, with Oliver O’Shaughnessy of Bellurgan Wheelers and Junior Tour of Ireland winner Matthew Walls of Lucan CRC equal on time at the top.

The two teenagers were best of the combined junior and senior field in the Leinster title race at Jenkinstown Hill, a 1.68km climb with an average gradient of 8.1 per cent. Walls and O’Shaughnessy both stopped the clock in a time of 4:53.

It was very close to a junior clean sweep of the podium as Sean Lundy (UCD Cycling Club) got up for 3rd place, some five seconds down on Walls and O’Shaughnessy.

Bob Maye (Clonard RC) was the junior who just about missed out on the Leinster bronze; finishing in 4th, just three seconds down on Lundy, with a recent Cycling Leinster racing trip abroad clearly bringing on Maye’s form.

Claire Diffley (Un-Attached Leinster) claimed the women’s Leinster title in a time of 6:10 in the Cuchulainn Cycling Club promotion. Holly McCaffrey (Longcourt Hotel-NCW) took silver with 6:57 while Grace O’Rourke (Spellman-Dublin Port) claimed the bronze medal after clocking a time of 8:05.
