Jonathan Milan has broken the 4km individual pursuit world record to win gold at the UCI World Track Championships in Copenhagen. It was the second time today the world record had gone, with Great Britain's Josh Charlton beating
Charlton’s new record was 0.332 seconds faster than Ganna’s, which was set in 2022. However, though Charlton then went on to face Milan in the gold-silver ride this evening, the Italian dominated the race.
He went into an early lead, and though Charlton looked for the briefest time like he was staging a comeback, Milan was on a charge and claimed the gold a new world record in a time of 3:59.153, compared with Charlton's 3:59.304 this morning.
Milan looked like he had held back in qualifying as his time for the opening kilometre in the final was one second quicker than in qualifying this morning.
The bronze-4th battle today was between two Brits - Dan Bigham and Harry Tanfield - with Bigham moving down his rival in the second half of the race. He claimed bronze in his last ride ahead of retirement.
He has now hung up his racing wheels - and left his performance engineer role at Ineos Grenadiers, after criticising the British team. He will soon take on the position of head of performance engineering at Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe.
