Remco Evenepoel gestured to this young Tour de France fan to move aside, but he was frustrated the media did not report on what happened next

Remco Evenepoel (Soudal QuickStep) has expressed his disappointment at what he saw as the media’s unfair depiction of his interaction with a young fan at the Tour de France in Lille today.

Evenepoel was caught out in the crosswinds and did not make the front group of 33 riders on stage 1.

Instead, he was back in 67th place, losing 39 seconds to stage winner Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), not to metion his general classification rivals Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike).

After the stage, Evenepoel was understandably frustrated at his time loss, saying he was “asleep” in the run-in when the group split.

As he made his way back to his team bus, a young boy was waiting for an autograph. However, Evenepoel appeared top gesture to him to make way, and went straight to the bus.

The incident was recorded and the footage shared on social media, much to Evenepoel’s annoyance.

He took to Instagram to insist he gave the boy, and others, photographs and selfies at the team bus just minutes later. He was frustrated the media only picked up on the earlier incident.

“For everybody who is speaking or typing (shit). I gave the boy, and 20+ others, a signature and a selfie after I rode on the rollers and recovered a bit and took a shower,” he said.

“I will never let young kids stand in the wind. Thanks for only showing negative stuff media.”
