Evan Bernie of Sundrive Track Team has won the latest round of the Mondello Series, with last year’s junior scratch race national champion proving fastest in the kick to the line from a breakway group.
Teenager Bernie was best, by a margin, in the final gallop to the finish line in the Dublin Ravens promotion, getting the better of the other six riders he was with for his first victory in the series.
He topped the podium from Gavin Stapleton (Bikeworx Celbridge) and Bradley Turner (Kilcullen Cycling Club Murphy Geospacial), with junior rider Bob Maye (Clonard RC) finishing just off the podium in 4th place.
Ronan Griffin (UCD Cycling Club) placed 5th from Richard Grant (Dungarvan CC) in 6th. Emyvale CC’s Declan McEntee rounded out the seven-man group that sprinted for victory on the night.
In the overall series standings, Jack Caldwell (Unattached) holds the lead on 15 points, 10 of those coming from placings – including a victory in mid June – and five points secured via the stickybottle primes on offer each race.
Junior rider, Matthew Walls (Lucan CRC), who won the Junior Tour of Ireland this year, is 2nd in the series, with nine points while Adam Cullen (Athy Wheelers) and Mark Dowling (All human-VeloRevolution) in 3rd and 4th, both on eight points.
