Damien Shaw has taken stage 2 of the Tour of Ulster after attacking early in the day and surviving to win despite being caught after the final climb by Marcus Christie of An Post-Chainreaction riding for the Cycling Ulster selection.
Aquablue's Shaw took the stage by just four seconds in the end from team mate Bryan McCrystal, with third placed Christie on the same time.
Shaw had been out front for most of the stage, with Christie jumping across to him on the final climb marked by McCrystal.
After they claimed the first three spots on the stage, Conor Murphy (Caldwell Cycles) was next home some 16 seconds down on the stage winner. Last weekend’s winner in Bohermeen, Ali Macaulay (Cycling Ulster) was in 5th place a further two seconds back.
The winner overall at Kerry Group Rás Mumhan, Mark Dowling of DID Dunboyne led a depleted field home in 6th place at 25 seconds.
Yesterday’s stage winner and yellow jersey this morning, Greg Swinand of UCD CC retains his lead after he came home on the same time as Dowling after some strong driving by his team to close down Shaw and the pairing he was joined by late in the day.
Swinand, who came home solo from the winning escape yesterday, definitely retains that jersey despite an earlier report by stickybottle which confused his finishing time and erroneously put Shaw in yellow.
However, as we stated in our earlier report, Shaw not only takes the stage win today but also the polka dot jersey and the points jersey.
Swinand still leads by 12 seconds from North Down CC’s Dave Watson who was second yesterday. John Mason of DID Dunboyne is third overall at 14 seconds.
Also in yesterday’s winning move, Sean Lacey of Aquablue is 4th overall at 15 seconds with his team mate and defending champion Joe Fenlon in 5th overall some 21 seconds down and Cuchulainn CC’s in-form Liam Dolan in 6th overall on the same time.
Shaw moves up to 7th some 23 seconds down on Swinand and McCrystal in 8th, 29 seconds down. It means Aquablue have four riders in the top eight and within 29 seconds of the yellow jersey going into tomorrow’s final stage.
