Carlos Rodríguez, the Ineos Grenadiers team leader on the Tour de France, has been forced to abandon the race after coming down in the crash that marred the finish of yesterday's stage 17 to Valence.
The Spanish rider was 10th overall and had gone on the attack in recent days in a big to improve his general classification position. However, he was among the fallers in the crash with 1km to go yesterday.
Though he made it to the finish, he later underwent full medical checks, with scans revealing damage to his pelvis from the crash, ruling him out of taking any further part in the race.
"Carlos Rodríguez will regrettably not take the start of stage 18 today following his crash in the final moments of yesterday’s stage," Ineos Grenadiers said in a brief statement on Thursday.
"Hospital scans have confirmed a fracture of the pelvis. Carlos is in good spirits and remains under the close supervision of our medical team. He will now return home to focus on recovery and the rehabilitation process.£
Rodríguez was 2:53 down on Healy and his absence now means Jordan Jegat (Team TotalEnergies) moves up to 10th overall. The French rider is 5:18 behind Healy at the start of today's stage, finishing on Col de la Loze.
