Shock as Gino Mäder dies after Tour de Suisse crash

Gino Mäder taking a fine stage win in the Giro d'Italia in 2021, but now the Swiss rider has died after a crash while racing on home roads

Gino Mäder (Bahrain Victorious) has died from the injuries he sustained in a crash while descending at the Tour de Suisse yesterday. There were grave concerns for him after he crashed off the road and was found motionless in a body of water, according to the race organisers.

He was revived at the scene and airlifted to hospital for urgent treatment. However, when no update emerged last night about his condition it only served to heighten concerns in the cycling world about his prospects of recovery.

Very sadly, his Bahrain Victorious team has now announced that he died from his injuries, with pro cycling in shock at the news and today's stage at Tour de Suisse neutralised as a mark of respect. The riders were due to ride the last 20km of the stage, in a neutralised format, as a tribute to Mäder.

Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) also crashed at the same location as Mäder - on the descent of the Albula Pass. However, while the young American suffered concussion, the only other injuries he sustained were minor.
