Incredible footage of fans with riders on chaotic last climb of Giro | Video

Hugh Carthy squeezes passed race leader Richard Carapaz yesterday as the roadside fans go wild to see the stars

Saturday's penultimate stage of the Giro d'Italia served up a brilliant battle on the final climb of the race, the Marmolada Passo Fedaia.

Jai Hindley (Bora-hansgrohe) had one last chance to crack race leader Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) and managed to do so. The Australian rode away on the slopes of the climb and gained what proved to be enough time to win the race yesterday into Verona.

The fans absolutely packed onto the climb on Saturday and in the footage below - which appears to have been recorded by one of the roadside fans - all the pain of the climb, at the end of three weeks of racing, is etched on the riders' faces.

However, aside from the sheer brutality of Grand Tour racing being so clear to see, there is also a celebratory atmosphere a little further back the field. Riders are high-fiving fans and even taking their flags from them and riding along with them.

This video captures the atmosphere superbly and it's well worth a look.
