He started the race this year saying that he’d be disappointed with anything other than a repeat win, but instead Daire Feeley is out of the Rás Tailteann.

The Cork All human-VeloRevolution rider crashed close to the finish yesterday, lost over eight minutes and told stickybottle today that due to concussion he had to withdraw from the race. He and also outlined what happened to cause the crash.

“With three K to go, there was  a bunch of about 70 of us coming in to the line, one of the final roundabouts before the finish,” he said at this morning’s start in Charlestown. “It was actually 3.3 kilometres to go, so just outside of that three kilometre limit for getting the same time as the winner.

“From what I can remember, a rider went up on the footpath and realized it was a bad idea, then came back on top of the bunch and brought a lot of us down. And unfortunately, that ended my race. I got a bang to the head, broke the bike. And due to failing concussion tests now I’m out of the race, which is a pity.”

Feeley told Stickybottle that he experienced some slight memory loss after the bang to the head. He’s fortunately otherwise alright, but must take time off the bike now to fully recover.

“Look, it’s disappointing,” he said. “But what can you do?”

We’ll have much more later from Feeley, talking about the Rás experience, the British domination, dealing with highs and lows in sport and what is next for him.
