Irish cyclist Ben Healy has been rewarded with a new multi-year deal after what can only be described as a dream 2023 so far; the 22-year-old Irish cyclist securing a Giro stage victory after a 50km solo breakaway on stage 8 of the Italian Grand Tour last month.
While Healy was a leading U23 rider before joining the World Tour, with stage wins in the three most prestigious U23 stage races, his run in the top tier of the sport this season has been even more prolific.
Before winning his Giro stage, Healy had already won two races this year – GP Industria & Artigianato and a stage at Coppi e Bartali – as well as placing 2nd in both Brabantse Pijl and Amstel Gold Race before rounding off his spring with 4th in Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
And now his team, EF Education-EasyPost, has extended his contract on a multi-year basis. The US-registered team did not reveal the length of the new contract. However, it will see him stay with the squad for at least two more years.
That's great news for Healy - as the contract will definitely involve a large salary bump. The new contract will also be music to the ears of Irish cycling fans as it means he is staying in an environment where he is exceling and where he has also been allowed to race for his own results.
Riders like Healy are often snapped up, on a big money contracts, by the richest teams in the sport to ride as deluxe domestiques or to be become just one big name rider among a much larger classics roster.
However, having joined EF Education-EasyPost last season on a two-year contract, and already delivered so much for the team, Healy is sure to enjoy even more support next season and will be permitted to continue racing with his exciting brand of attacking.
The new deal was announced by EF Education-EasyPost this afternoon, with Healy securing the contract at a great time in his career as other teams were also interested in him, thus strengthening his hand in the negotiations.
