Elia Viviani, seen here in a file photo, is in hospital after being hit by a moto in the crash in the clip below on Paris Roubaix.
Team Sky has confirmed its Italian sprinter Elia Viviani is undergoing medical treatment in hospital after he was hit from behind by a race motorbike on Paris-Roubaix.
As the clip of the incident below reveals, a rider in a large group fell first - apparently after clipping a spectator on the tightly packed Arenberg section of pavé the riders were hurtling over.
And when one rider went down at such speed others fell too and soon the road was completely blocked by those who came down and others who were forced to unclip.
In the chaos a race moto, carrying a driver and passenger, hit Viviani from behind.
The motorbike seemed unable to stop in time to avoid the back of the group of held up riders, though the precise details of what happened were unclear at the time of writing.
Viviani was the only rider hit by the moto and was at least able to struggle to his feet after the smash, though his leg became jammed under the motorbike.
Servais Knaven of Team Sky confirmed to journalists at the finish that the Italian was in hospital.
“If you go in the Arenberg there should not be any motorbikes near the riders," he said.
"He was in the group with Sagan and Cancellara... he is in hospital. He looks all right, nothing serious we think."
