Bad weather is set to pelt the first big day of the domestic racing season, with heavy rain expected across the country along with gale force winds in some places.

However, it looks like the more extreme weather predicted by Met Eireann for later today will not reach Irish shores until this evening when the race action is done.

In Ulster, where the Phoenix GP takes place today in Crumlin, heavy rain was expected early in the day giving way to more showery weather.

Highest temperatures are set to reach 8 to 10 degrees. Winds were expected to be moderate southerly this morning, but it was predicted those breezes would stiffen in the afternoon to strong westerly winds that will reach gale force later in the evening.

In Munster, where the Lacey Cup takes place in Tralee, it is forecast to be wet and windy.

The only bright note is that the heavy rain is expected to clear at times to scattered showers.

Temperatures are expected to max at 9 to 12 degrees in a “fresh to strong” southwest to west wind.
