Steve Cummings has followed up his messy exit from Ineos Grenadiers by joining Team Jayco AlUla as a sports director. He will work with Eddie Dunbar, who also joined the Australian World Tour team after frustration at Ineos Grenadiers.
Cummings was lead sports director at Ineos Grenadiers for the Tour de France for several years before being left at home this year, and remaining benched through the remainder of the season. He reportedly did not get on with the team's best paid rider Tom Pidcock.
However, having confirmed a few weeks ago he was leaving the British team - though Ineos Grenadiers made no announcement itself - he has now been confirmed as a new sports director with Jayco AlUla.
“I’m really excited to be joining Team Jayco AlUla," he said in a statement issued by the team early on Monday. "This team has a strong reputation for its professionalism, and commitment to success, which aligns with my own values and experiences in sport.
“I’m looking forward to contributing to its ongoing success, helping all my teammates reach their full potential.
“For me, this is more than just joining a team – it’s an opportunity to be part of a culture that celebrates growth, resilience, and meaningful results.
Naturally through having a long career within cycling, on and off the bike, I already know a lot of team members and I can’t wait to roll up my sleeves and get started with them.”
Jayco AlUla's general manager, Brent Copeland, said he was delighted to secure the services as some as experience as Cummings; a former pro rider for 15 years, and two-time Tour de France stage winner.
"His personality and professionalism is something that we believe will fit very well within our culture,” Copeland said of Cummings.
“Steve has such a wide skill set and is a very experienced sport director having of course experienced first-hand what it means to be a rider himself, having won at the highest level during his time as a pro rider.
"I was truly impressed by Steve’s attention to detail and visionary approach during our first conversation about the team. I immediately felt that he would bring a dynamic energy that we would all benefit from.”
