Rory McIlroy may be the world's top-ranked golfer at present but the Irishman is about to throw himself into competition outside his comfort zone; in e-cycling.
McIlroy will be the sole Irish representative when stars from across a variety of sports go head-to-head on the home trainer 'Peloton'.
The full field in the male race includes:
- Mike Golic Jr: Radio host and former Notre Dame offensive lineman
- Matt Grevers: Olympic swimmer
- Gordon Hayward: Boston Celtics basketball forward
- Booger McFarland: Twice Super Bowl winner turned NFL analyst
- Rory McIlroy: Pro golfer from Ireland now based in Jupiter, Florida
- Kyle Rudolph: Tight end for the Minnesota Vikings
- Justin Thomas: Pro golfer
- Bubba Watson: Pro golfer
The 'Peloton All-Star Ride' takes place this Saturday, in 20-minute races. Peloton will donate one million meals to the Food Bank for New York City.
The races, one male and one female, will be led by some of Peloton's most popular instructors on the home trainer device.
Action gets underway from 7am Irish time, 12 noon ET in the US, and the races are being broadcast live by ESPN on social media.
Golf Digest has nicknamed McIlrory ‘Peloton stud’ given his love for cycling, which appears to be a relatively recent romance.
McIlroy (30) has explained that since Covid19 lock-down was introduced he has turned to Peloton to get a tough work-out several times each week.
He called out some of his golfing rivals via a social media video, challenging them to try and beat him, while saying he had reached 69th place out of almost 11,500 cyclists on Peloton after reaching 800 kilojoules on one ride.
“I like the fact it makes me earn my dinners and keeps me
in shape,” the Irishman said of his decision to get started on Peloton.
“Cardio was always a problem for me, I never really liked
it, but since getting the Peloton and joining that whole community, I've really
started enjoying it.
“I like the leader board aspect, the fact it is
competitive in some ways, and you're always trying to beat your last score.”
