Cyclists in Leinster will soon have a new greenway to
ride on after planning approval was secured for the new Broadmeadow
Greenway.
The project, in Fingal County Council’s area, will cost €12 million and will link Malahide and Donabate across the Broadmeadow Estuary; a great spot for training and leisure cycling.
At 6km in length, the greenway will be built jointly by Fingal County Council and the National Transport Authority (NTA). Already in the general area the Baldoyle to Portmarnock greenway has been built along the coast and will soon open.

The jewel in the crown of the new Broadmeadow Greenway will be the stretch along the 280 metre Malahide Railway Viaduct across the estuary.
On that section the cycling and walking greenway will run alongside the working railway line, see image below.
Cyclists will be able to ride on the new greenway from Malahide Castle to Newbridge House; taking a route along the coastline and through picturesque farmland as well as demesne and park lands.
The new project will form the next phase of the Fingal Coastal Way. The Baldoyle-Portmarnock greenway is also part of that Fingal Coastal Way and planning works are underway for a third section; a greenway from Sutton to Malahide.

The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Eoghan O’Brien, said: “This is
great news for Malahide and Donabate coming as it does at a time when
businesses in both towns are dealing with the implications of the COVID-19
pandemic.
“Linking
two of our regional parks for walkers, joggers and cyclists will provide many
opportunities and I welcome the Council’s commitment to commence construction
in 2021.
“As a
local councillor this is something that I have pushed for many years and it is
great to see it finally get the green light.”
Ann Marie Farrelly, Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, said: “This will be a fantastic greenway and we are delighted to receive the planning consent.
“It is my intention that we will be on site to commence construction in 2021 with the aim of having the project completed by 2022."
