Road races cancelled; lack of interest cited by one organiser

Some of the races set to be held by West Down Wheelers tomorrow, Saturday, are off. And a criterium in Monaghan has also been scrapped for now.

A number of road races that were set for the home scene have been cancelled, with one promoting club citing a severe lack of interest from riders.

In another case, Emyvale Cycling Club has cancelled the criterium it had been due to promote next month.

It told stickybottle that a number of local interests,
namely some council officials and local businesses, were unhappy the town was
to be closed for the race.

As a result, it has scrapped the race for this year but
said it was working on plans to guarantee it could go ahead next year.

More immediately, West Down Wheelers has said some of its events planned for tomorrow, Saturday, are off.

The events for A4 riders, Masters and women have all been called off. The only race that will now take place is the A2-A3 event which the club said was full.

“Due to a severe lack of interest we reluctantly have
taken the decision to cancel the Masters, ladies and A4 race on Saturday. All
A4 riders will be refunded,” the club said in a brief statement.

News of the cancellation comes just days after Western
Lakes Cycling Club cancelled the planned new Connacht Three Day event.

That race was set to replace the Bogman Two Day and
Ballinrobe Three Day. But the club said interest from riders was so poor the
race was not viable.

This was despite the fact it had lined up a number of sponsors
for the event which had been planned for the June Bank Holiday weekend.
