A man has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicant in a follow-up Garda operation after cyclists were knocked from their bikes and injured in a road traffic crash in Co Cork.
The three injured cyclists were out for an evening spin at the time and are from the Midleton area of Co Cork where the crash occurred.
Though none of the cyclists suffered life-changing injuries, one of them required more treatment that the other victims. After the crash, the driver left the scene and gardaí were searching for him.
However, an arrest has since been made and the criminal investigation into the serious incident was continuing, with the arrested man granted bail pending the conclusion of the Garda inquiry.
Garda Headquarters in Dublin said a number of gardaí, and other members of the emergency services, on Wednesday evening respond to calls following a crash near Midleton, Co Cork.
“The collision occurred at approximately 8.05pm on the R627 at West Park. The car failed to remain at the scene,” the Garda statement added.
“The three male cyclists were conveyed to Cork University Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. A technical examination of the scene was conducted and the road has reopened to traffic.
A man, aged in his 30s, has since been arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of an intoxicant. He has been released without charge pending further investigation.”
