Annemiek van Vleuten wins Omloop Het Nieuwsblad last year. Now both the women’s and men’s races will be broadcast on Eurosport on Saturday

Cycling fans were let disappointed earlier in week when Eurosport confirmed it would not be broadcast the races of ‘Opening Weekend’ this weekend in Belgian when Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is due to be contested.

However, the broadcaster that calls itself ‘the home of cycling’ has now confirmed it will broadcast the race after all, following agreement with Flanders Classics, the organisation that owns the events.

The last ditch agreement to broadcast the races on Eurosport and GCN has been confirmed by Eurosport, with cycling fans now set to have Omloop Het Nieuwsblad on our screens on Saturday.

Eurosport and GCN will screen the men’s and women’s Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the first cobbled classic of the year, across most of Europe – including Britain and Ireland – but not in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg “where the race will be aired on a non-exclusive basis”.

Guy Voisin, director of cycling at Discovery Inc with owns Eurosport and GCN, said the coverage would behind from 1.10pm , Irish time, on Saturday.

“Eurosport X GCN is happy to be able to bring the opening spring classic of 2021 to our cycling fans across Europe,” he said.

“As the Home of Cycling, our ambition is to develop our cycling offer which in 2021 will see our community of fans enjoy more than 300 days of cycling action.”
