Gardaí say saw sticking out of truck could have been very serious for cyclists

Gardaí stopped this van with a saw sticking out, which they said could have caused very serious injury to cyclists, motorcyclists or pedestrians the van driver was passing on the roads

Gardaí in Co Kerry have stopped a driver in a truck with a saw sticking out of the vehicle and warned the accidental incident could have had very serious consequences for cyclists, motorcyclists or pedestrians the driver was passing.

A photograph of
the saw sticking out of the vehicle was shared on the Garda’s ‘Southern Region’ Facebook page, which covers all
Garda activity in Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

And in a welcome
development, when some Facebook users started joking about the saw being placed
in a good location for cyclists or making saw puns, the Garda replied to those posts urging
those people to desist from the remarks.

“Whilst
unintentional, this could have caused serious injury to a cyclist, motorcyclist
or pedestrian. Road safety should
always be a priority. Before starting a journey, you should always make sure
your load is secured.”

The saw was
spotted a checkpoint being conducted yesterday by the Garda’s Kerry Roads Policing Unit and the Road
Safety Authority.

When some
Facebook users began joking about the incident, the Garda Facebook page replied
by saying: “Just to remind everyone, we all share
the road. Whilst I appreciate the saw puns.... some jokes and comments about cyclists
are not funny or appropriate. This could have caused serious injury to someone
were it not for our Roads Policing Unit and the RSA.”
