
A man in his 60s has been killed while cycling in Co Cork in a crash involving the driver of a van. The death of the man on Wednesday evening is the sixth death of a cyclist since the start of the year.
Gardaí said the latest fatal collision occurred on the N25 at Carrigtwohill at about 5pm, when the alarm was raised and gardaí and paramedics rush to the scene on the eastbound carriageway.
“The pedal cyclist, a man aged in his 60s, was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Garda Headquarters said in a statement.
“His body has since been removed to the mortuary at University Cork Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.
“The road is currently closed for technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and will remain closed overnight and the examination of the scene will take place in the morning.
“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward. Investigations are ongoing.”
Any road users who may have camera footage – including dash-cam – and were travelling in the area between 4.30pm and 5pm on Wednesday are asked to make the footage available to investigating gardaí.
