Living on a diet of foods regarded by society as healthy, and within recommended daily sugar levels, resulted in weight gain, mood swings and the first signs of fatty liver for Australian actor and director Damon Gameau.
Known to the Irish public as chef Geoff Mitchell from the RTE television drama 'Raw' (above), Australian actor and director Damon Gameau is set to release his 'Sugar Film' documentary next year.
The show follows him as he abandons the sugar-free diet he turned to three years ago.
Instead, he exists on foods regarded by society as healthy; with his daily intake of food within the recommended levels of sugar.
However, despite this he puts on weight, suffers from mood swings and starts to develop a fatty liver.
He says all of these developments arise despite him resisting the temptation of overdosing on sugar by eating foods such as ice cream, sweets and fizzy drinks to add dramatic effect to his film.
His experiment involves consuming foods that most people turn to when the try to be healthy; low-fat yogurt, cereals, juices and so on.

Gameau added four inches to his waistline in just three weeks eating the kind of foods most people believe are healthy and responsible.
However, Gameau makes the point that even when eating what appears to be a balanced diet, he consumes 40 teaspoons of sugar every day.
And it is the switch from a non-sugar diet to what is regarded as an everyday diet that has proven to bring about such ill effects; an additional four inches on his waistline in just three weeks being one.
Gameau says much of what he has eaten for the documentary is the kind of food parents trying to be responsible give to their children but simply do not realise the sugar content is so high.
"We are not being dogmatic and saying people have to quit sugar," he said.
"It's just being aware that when I had breakfast cereal, low-fat yoghurt and apple juice for breakfast I was eating 20 teaspoons of sugar."
You’ll have to wait until next year to see the documentary, but you can have a sneak preview in the trailer below.
