The slammed stem set-up is seen more and more in pro cycling. Would you fancy it?
Many of the pro riders are now riding with slammed stems, with often a huge height difference between their stems and saddles.
It leads to a more aero position, but perhaps one that regular riders (that’s most us) would find too uncomfortable – too “tucked”.
Many riders prefer a more upright position for more comfort when riding, especially for long distances.
The aero position created by slamming right down the stem that holds your handlebars is closer to a TT position; where comfort is sacrificed for the most aero set-up possible.
And some of the riders opting for the slammed set-up are also bringing their saddles forward more than normal and tilting them slight downwards; with the front of the saddle a bit lower than the back.
It all adds to a position that pushes then lower and more tucked towards the front end of the bike, like a TT position.
But of course most TTs are quite short in comparison to road races.
So why have pro riders developed a preference for the slammed stem set-up?
Matt Stephens of Global Cycling Network caught up with some riders to ask them in this clip below.
