Video: US sprint rival of Dublin Thunder revs to huge Watts

This is a big powerful man putting in a seriously big WattBike effort, and he'll face the Irish next week in the United States.

With the Dublin Thunder track racing team about to depart for the US for the inaugural round of the new World Cycling League, here's an interesting peak at what one of their rivals can do.

In the clip below, US sprinter Nate Koch goes flat out to reach maximum Watts of 2,300, with a 30-second average 1,200 Watts.

From Long Beach, California, Koch (29) is 5' 11" and 86kg and will ride for the California Wave team in the World Cycling League.

A relative latecomer to track cycling, Koch was a scholarship decathlete at University in California before switching to the bike and quickly using his power to make the US track team.

He’s been a medallist in the sprint and keirin at the US national championships and also took a bronze with the US team sprint line-up at the Pan AM Championships.

A colourful and entertaining character, he is expected to be the World Cycling League's star turn, at least in the early days of the new franchise.

‘Dublin Thunder’ will send a seven-strong team to the west coast of America to race the lucrative event that the organisers are hopeful of transforming into something like the Bremen or Ghent Six-Day.
