But even if you're an old hand, there's one or two tips in here for you that will undoubtedly improve the way you're doing things.
- Make sure you have a pump, tube and tyre levers on all spins
- Find a safe place away from the road to fix a flat when one happens
- Take your wheel out and focus on taking the tyre off, on one side only
- Insert your lever under the tyre right beside the valve
- Run the lever around the inside of one side of the tyre until you reach the valve again
- When you reach the valve, the tyre is off on one side
- The tube can then be eased out from under the tyre
- But leave the tyre on the wheel on one side
- And leave the valve in place; in the hole in the rim
- Pump the tyre and find the hole in the tube
- Check that exact spot on the tyre (leaving the valve in will enable you find that spot)
- When you’ve found it, rub it clean of any glass/wire/debris that may have caused the puncture
- Rub sandpaper on the area of the hole on the tube; it roughens the tube surface and will help the patch to stick
- Rub some glue on and wait one minute until it dries/hardens a little
- Then hold the patch done really firmly; pushing down on the patch from the centre out
- Carefully peal the plastic cover off the patch and gently work the edges of the patch into the tube
- Work the repaired tube back under the tyre, pumping it up a little when it’s all in
- Once the air is inserted, make sure the tube is then fully inside the tyre
- Watch for any edges of the tube sticking out
- Unless the tube is fully back under the tyre, it will puncture by pinching when you start riding again
- Once satisfied the tube is all the way back into the tyre, pump it rock hard
- Stick the wheel back in and away you go
