Choosing the right gears to put on your bike and then selecting the correct ones to use on the open road can make a staggering difference to riders of all abilities.
Gear choice is perhaps not the most rock ‘n’ roll subject we’ve ever brought you advice on. But it’s absolutely essential to get it right.
If the gears you’re using are too low or too high, your cycling will be inefficient and it will also detract from the enjoyment you get from the sport.
It’s no fun busting a gut going around a hilly course if the gears you choose to ride are too high, or indeed if the sprockets on your rear wheel or your front chainring are unsuitable to start with.
And if the gears you’re choosing to ride are too low, or the combinations on your bike simply unsuitable; chances are you’re not pushing yourself hard enough.
If so, you may find a very steep jump in intensity when you decide to begin training or riding sportives in a group.
And you’ll likely be miles off the standard required if and when you take the step into racing.
The video below offers some great advice on what gears to choose.
One bit of advice we’ll add is that once you’re out on your bike, make sure you become very confident at changing gears and using the full range.
Don’t get stuck using just a couple of options because you don’t have the confidence to make use of the full range on your bike.
