When regular pedals were tested against those with a clip-in mechanism - used with cycling shoes fitted with cleats - the results were unexpected.
The results of this test are perhaps unexpected but we'd still very much recommend opting for a clip-in pedal and shoe set up.
This brief film suggests the benefits of the clip-in option over regular pedals is not what experienced riders would have you believe.
However, the test doesn't capture those moments when you're most under pressure; pulling up and pushing down when climbing or trying to generate a sudden burst of power to break away or respond when somebody else tries to.
Clip-in pedals are also much safer in the wet and generally give you more control.
They also enable you to do bunny hops when you come to a hole or debris in the road that you only spot at the last second.
The big test

One of literally thousands of types of regular pedals. When we say "regular pedals" we mean those where you don't clip or strap your feet in.
