Are wider rims and wider tyres much faster? There is growing evidence that they are, take a look at this explainer video.
For years the logic with wheels was simple; skinny rims and tyres pumped as hard as possible were fastest.
Then aero dynamics came along and added to the simple logic.
But still, nobody would have dreamed to put deliberately wider rims and tyres on a bike to make it go faster.
But now the evidence is clear that wider rims and wide tyres can indeed be faster and more aero and rolls less.
And it also seems those benefits are added to when we go off roads that make our bikes vibrate, even bit tiny amounts.
The vibration slowing us is not captured in wind tunnel tests, but there is now other data that highlights how this happens.
Many still don’t believe of course, but have a look at this clip which explains it really well.
