The more eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed a yellow bull ring on the end of Sam Bennett's nose at the Tour de France.

The Bora-Argon 18 man sports ear rings and wears his hair peroxide every now and again, so it wouldn't be a major surprise if it turned out to be a piercing.

However, a vanity or decorative item it is not.

The young Carrick-on-Suir sprinter is among a growing number of riders, including Tour leader Chris Froome of Team Sky, to use the device.

Australian Jack Bobridge also wore one for his hour record attempt at the start of the year.

Called The Turbine, it's a breathing aid that is inserted into the nostrils and gently pushes them open so athletes can improve the air flow into their lungs.

The manufacturers claim increased airflow of up to 38 per cent, with the device coming in three different sizes. Each size is adjustable so users can find the most comfortable fit.

The 'ring' is the only piece of the device that should be visible. It is the bridge between the two sections of the device that sit in each nostril.
