Having been victorious in Rás Luimní in March and also taken the win in Currow, Co Kerry, a month later; Mego Racing's Simon Ryan went into his fifth Rás full of confidence.

But the 23-year-old exceeded his own expectations when he went clear in a number of key breakaways and on one stage took the county rider prize for his efforts.

Ryan spent most of stage 2 in a small breakaway from which Bryan McCrystal (Team ASEA) would press on alone in the hunt for a stage win only to come unstuck on the climb of Aherlow within 10km of the stage finish in Tipperary.

And following that ride he would also take his place in a number of groups off the front of the main field in subsequent days, including the winning escape on stage 5 from Newport to Ballina.

He would finish 14th on the day, just 16 seconds behind victor Aaron Gate of An Post-Chainreaction. And he secured the county rider prize for his efforts.

The quality of his ride was underlined by the fact he was the only county rider in the move.

The next best county man - Marc Potts of North Down-Graham Powerhouse Sport - finished three places behind him but was six minutes adrift.

Ryan, who finished 52nd overall, very nearly did not make the start of the Rás last Sunday week.

He suffered chronic pain five days before the start and was suspected of having appendicitis.

However, the doctors decided against surgery and his condition cleared, allowing him to race.

Below, Ryan has outlined his main data from the eight-day Rás. He just turned 23 years old last month and weighs 70kg.
