Quinn Simmons power output on way to junior World Champs win

Quinn Simmons and the US team ripped it up at the World Championships in Yorkshire; Simmons winning the title and Junior Tour of Ireland victor Magnus Sheffield taking bronze.

But more than winning two of the three medals on offer, the team split the race to pieces during an absolutely dominant ride.

And not only did Simmons attack the breakaway and go solo with more than 30km remaining, he rode the race like he owned it from start to finish.

When some of the riders in the breakaway starting missing turns, Simmons spent his time barking at them, determined not to give them a free ride, or on the front pushing the pace.

His power data also reveals the sheer athletic quality of the his victory.

Simmons is aged 18 years, 6’ 5” in height and weighs 72kg. Some of his key numbers from the Worlds were:

  • On the steep climb of Cray Hill, with over 100km to go, he did an average of 506 Watts, or 7 Watts per kg for more than six minutes.
  • On the longest climb of the race, Hill End, the USA team really hit it hard; Simmons averaging 400W, or 5.6W/kg.
  • On the first 6½ minutes of Hill End he did 436 Watts, or 6.1 W/kg; a breakaway of five featuring Simmons and Sheffield went clear.
  • With 33km remaining on Oak Beck, Quinn averaged 400 W for eight minutes.
  • When attacking he hit a peak of 724 W and then held 418 W to the top of the climb for five minutes.
  • One the closing laps of the Harrogate circuit he did over 400W.
