Omagh Wheelers man Angus Fyffe has put in a very good start to the season and despite being a full-time student in Belfast the 20-year-old still racks up a decent number of hours training in the week.
That allows him to be competitive when Sunday comes and he pins on race numbers.
He prefers a higher training load earlier in the week, resting up towards the latter portion as race day nears and he wants to be fresh.
As you can see from his most recent training week there's quite an emphasis on speed work as well as some full-gas efforts.
We spoke to him just over one week ago, when he was putting in some tough training before easing back for the upcoming Tour of Ulster.

Fyffe is now a regular in the main breakaways in the races he rides and has been getting onto the podium regularly, winning in Mountcharles last Saturday and taking 3rd in the Mid Ulster GP the following day (Photo: David McVeigh - The Belgian Project)
Training goals this time of year
To train hard and be consistent.
I want to have a good ride in the Tour of Ulster. Unfortunately I won’t be doing the An Post Rás as I have four exams the same week.
General goals for the year
My ultimate goal is to head back out to Belgium in the summer and win a kermesse.
I came close last year and I don’t see any reason why I couldn’t go close or even win one again.

Monday
I’m in class all day so just an easy hour after class, or before breakfast.
Either way I’m pretty keen to spin the legs after a hard weekend of training or racing or both.
Tuesday
Today’s session would typically be a 3-hour spin in Zone 2 at 240-250w which would include 2 or 3 20-minute sweet spot efforts around 320-330w.
I’ll usually have a TSS (training stress score) of around 180-200 after the ride.
Wednesday
This would be another 3-hour ride.
Recently I’ve started work on Vo2 max efforts so the ride would typically entail: 1 hour in Zone 2, 5x4-minute efforts full gas with plenty of rest in between.
I’m usually pretty empty after this so the last hour is just easy. Another 180 TSS day roughly.

Thursday
This is a shorter ride of 2 hours in Zone 1.
I’m usually pretty fatigued after four hard days training in 5 days (including previous weekend of training or racing) so I just use Thursdays to begin to freshen up for the weekend ahead.
Friday
Just an easy hour. If I’m feeling motivated I might do a bit of yoga with my mum. She’s pretty handy at it and helps keep me injury-free.
Saturday
I’ll either be racing or if not, I’ll do a 200+ TSS training ride.
Sunday
Race day
