Robin Kelly is not afraid to hit the turbo at any hour of the day and the father of small young kids says his training is all about utilising the time he has available to him. While weight training in the gym is out, starvation rides are not. He combines full-time work at Waterford Cycle Centre with a pretty serious training regime, as you can see (Photo: John Coleman – Dc Images)

Training goals at this time of the year
- To get consistent hours in on a weekly basis.
- Try to get my weight back down again having put on a good few kilos after the season finished.
- I will usually try to complete as much of my endurance sessions with very little carbs, or in a fasted state, but this will depend on the intensity or duration of the ride.
General goals for 2016
I was very happy with my season last year and would like to have similar results, but the big goal for next year would be to compete in the An Post Ras with my teammates from Waterford Racing Club.
We currently have 10 names in the hat and will all train with that goal in mind.

Monday
Usually a day off or if I can I try to get 45 minutes easy on the wahoo kickr (turbo trainer) for recovery.
These are the electronic trainers Team Sky use. They have a power meter and pretty much anything you could want to assist you in training - though they won't pedal for you.
We have 10 of them in the back of of the shop. (They retail at €1,300 a piece!)
Tuesday
I host a 1 hour kickr class in our shop at Waterford Cycle Centre with club mates. This session is usually tempo efforts or power training in a low gear. I mostly take part in the class myself.
Wednesday
I do an endurance ride in zone 2 for 3-4 hours and skip breakfast for this and eat after 1.5 or 2 hours or if it's just 3 hours I don't eat at all.
Thursday
Today is another 1 hour kickr class in the shop with the lads. This will be either tempo or strength training, depending on what we did on Tuesday.
Friday
Day off the bike completely.
Saturday
3-4 hours mostly in zone 2 with 2/3 tempo efforts of 15/20 minutes.
Our group usually race the last 10 kilometres of our weekend spins to try and teach guys racing tactics.
Sunday
4 hours endurance ride. I skip breakfast for this also and start eating after 1½ to 2 hours.
Some might not believe this but for a sprinter, I do very little sprint training, just what we do at the end of our spin.

Also pops a good wheelie when the need arises; always very important... (Photo: John Coleman – Dc Images)
