Irish rider on winning run swears by this huge chainring

Eoin O'Connell took another marvellous victory on Sunday when he soloed away from a stellar field to take the Munster road race title in Cork. The Killarney CC man is attributing his long-range efforts to a new 55-tooth chainring he has on his Boardman SLR 9.8 race bike.

Eoin O’Connell took his fourth win of the year on Sunday with another monstrous solo effort that saw him claim the Munster road race title.

The Killarney CC man had an army of top quality riders chasing him down over the course of the afternoon but not even their combined efforts could reel him in.

He said his wins are down to hard work, strategically-timed intervals in the week and oh, a massive 55-tooth chainring he’s fitted to a bike he recently bought.

The chainring is one more at home in time-trials which really benefits the rider when speeds are high while on downhill or tailwind sections it can be worth a few seconds.

“You’re never in the 53x25 or 28, so there’s no harm in having a few extra gears on the other side to use when you need,” said O’Connell.

“It’s fantastic on any downhill sections, it’s brilliant, once you go above 50-55 kph you’re spinning a 53x11 so the 55 gives you an extra bit.

“On any kind of a downhill section you’d be in top gear (with a 53); we have this time-trial league we do during the week and there is a fast downhill section where I was always spinning out.

“In the bunch you don’t tend to need it but out on your own I think it’s beneficial to pull out a few extra seconds on descents.”
