Romain Bardet takess summit victory

Friday’s stage 19 of the Tour de France proved once again that shorter stages are the way to achieve more exciting racing for the fans.

On a 145km long day that featured five Alpine passes, with the Montée de Bisanne and the climb to Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc making up the final, there was no real pause to the action.

And some of the riders put out higher Watts on this stage 19.

It was the second to last chance for the GC riders to contest for stage honours and they were not to be denied.

As a result, the 20-rider front group that rode away after 10km on the Collet de Tamie never got a lot of leeway. The pace remained high in both the peloton and up ahead.

Astana’s chase caused a particularly intense race. Emanuel Buchmann (Bora-Argon18) was part of the breakaway for most of the stage and his normalised power during 4hrs 20mins was incredible: 307W or 5.02W/kg.

The same was required in the yellow jersey group, where Warren Barguil (Giant-Alpecin) rode the stage at 5.03W/kg (314W). This performance allowed the Frenchman to finish in a fantastic 11th place.

Climb-by-climb: Pressure on all day

No Climb was taken in an any way relaxed way during Friday’s race.

KM 9 - Collet de Tamie (8.1km at 6.4%)

Climbing right from the gun. Greg Henderson (Lotto-Soudal) barely hangs on with 333W (4.70W/kg) for 25 minutes. Bora’s Emanuel Buchmann at a terrific 5.66W/kg (346W) for 21hrs 15mins to be in the break.

KM43 - Col de la Forclaz de Montmin (9.8KM at 6.9%)

Astana starts to set a quick pace to make the race difficult. Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) needs 400W (5.33W/kg) for 27 minutes of climbing to survive a little longer in the peloton.

KM74 - Col de la Forclaz de Queige (5.7KM at 7.5%)

On the steep climb, the breakaway increases the tempo again. Laurens Ten Dam (Giant-Alpecin) was in the group and is distanced slightly despite his 357W or 5.17W/kg power output. Main field pace drops a little, Daryl Impey (Orica) rides with 335W (4,72W/kg) for 18mins 30secs.

Climbing at their best

KM97 - HC Montée de Bisanne (12.4km at 7.5%)

The final phase of the stage starts with the GC group thinning out significantly, until only about 30 riders remain. Pace is high, but sustainable. Warren Barguil puts out 5,27W/kg (330W) for about 40min in the Froome group. Further up the road, Rafal Majka (Tinkoff) solidifies his KOM lead with maximum points in 39mins 25secs at about 330W or 5.32W/kg.

KM100 – 135 – Descent towards final climb

Surprisingly, the most significant differences. On the descent, rain pours down and several riders slip or crash on difficult roads. Among them 2ndplaced Bauke Mollema (Trek), who loses four minutes. Also a victim is Chris Froome. He is paced back but at that point, Romain Bardet (AG2r) has ridden away with a great downhill performance. He tackles the wettest, trickiest section at 58.4km/h and maxed out at 86km/h.

KM146 – Saint-Gervais Mont Blanc (9.8KM at 8%)

Bardet takes on climb with a 40sec advantage on the other favourites. A fantastic ride on the ascent, an estimated 400W or 6.15W/kg for 27mind 47secs, sees him take the stage. Only Rodriguez (Katusha), Valverde (Movistar) and Meintjes (Lampre) come close to him with an even faster ride on the climb. “JRod” rides at about 360W (6.21W/kg) for 27mins 35secs. Even 11thplaced Warren Barguil, who loses about 45secs on the final climb breaks the 6W/kg mark: 6.02W/kg for 28mins 10secs.

Stage 19 conclusions

The riders have reached their peak performances on this stage.

Power numbers surpass 6W/kg critically for the first time.

Froome loses some time, while other riders seem to get strong day-by-day.
