Sean McIntyre, (second left) came third in the Gran Fondo NI at the weekend after finishing behind winner Mark Kane (Dave Kane Cycles) and runner-up David Hamilton (North Down CC).
Caldwell Cycles Omagh rider Sean McIntyre is the reigning Ulster 50 and 100-mile time-trial champion and is regarded as extremely strong; both against the watch and in road races.
McIntyre took time out from road racing last weekend to ride the Gran Fondo Giro d'Italia Northern Ireland, crossing the line in 3rd place in the main event.
He put in a monstrous effort as the details, below, of his day's work underline.
He stopped the clock exactly on five hours which is a fine achievement given the lumpy nature of the course.
And to achieve that saw him produce two numbers that are truly massive; those being a highly impressive Normalised Power of 271 Watts and a Training Stress Score (TSS) of over 300.
Sean McIntyre's Gran Fondo Giro NI
Duration: 5:00:25
Distance: 108 miles
Too many miles to do on just two 750ml water bottles. Note to self never attempt to run on dry again.
TSS: 300.3
For the Shay Elliot I had a TSS of around 250. Not to say that this was harder it had more climbing and also there was no feeling of needing to sit in or save energy as you would in a road race.
Intensity Factor (IF): 0.77
How intense the event was, with 1 being super intense
Normalized Power (NP): 271 Watts
Hitting all the climbs quite hard pushed up the normalized power. This is a rough estimation of what power you would have put out if you rode at an even pace up and down all the hills.
Balance between left and right legs: 51.1/48.9%
Bit of an ongoing back problem is causing some weakness in my right leg.
Total Climbing: 8,130 ft
Loads of climbing meant for a very hard route for all riders.
Major Climb Time & Power numbers
- Dree Hill: 9min 17 seconds 353 Watts (Strava record David Montgomery 8:33)
- Spelga: 6:11 / 380 Watts (Strava record Gary Crory 5:12)
- Slieve Croob: 33:23 / 259 Watts (Strava record set during this event by Gareth Murray in our group at the time of 33:21)
Power Average: 250 Watts
A pretty high average given the amount of time not pedalling on descents and when sitting in the group
Maximum Power: 1,070 Watts
This was hit on a few playful attacks on the way into Saintfield around 15 miles in; we would cruise along as one big bunch for the next 15 miles or so.
Heart Rate: 138bpm average, 169bpm maximum
My Resting heart rate is around 35-40 depending on where I am in a training cycle with a maximum of around 172.
Calories: 4,675
During the Ride I drank two 750ml bottles (with a high 5 mix in them) and to eat two cliff bars and some other bar. I had 6 gels with me also (Could have probably have done with 3 times this much!)
Speed:
Average speed of 21.7mph and maximum Speed: 55.6 mph coming down off Spelga flat out.
