Cycling is an already expensive sport - especially in winter - so don't fork out more than you need to for homemade items like energy bars.

Going to the bike shop over Christmas can be a dangerous experience, what with shelves overflowing with everything you could possibly want.

From expensive wheels to waterproof kit and nutrition, you'll do well to come out of there with your credit card intact.

But whatever about the former two, spending national debt level amounts of money on nutrition is very avoidable, especially as we have the simplest - and most nutritious bar you can think of right here.

It has less than six ingredients and during the cold snap over winter there is definitely no fear of these melting on you.

Surprisingly, you don’t even need to oven bake these so even the most useless of us can produce them without too much fuss.

Ingredients

  • 250g dates
  • 200g oats
  • 100g nuts (hazelnuts are a good choice)
  • Cocoa powder (with no added sugar – the dates are already very sweet)
  • Flax and chia seeds are optional
  • Shredded coconut

Method

  • Blend the dates in an electronic blender, adding a few drops of water to keep the mixture from getting too dry
  • Add the cocoa powder while blending until it tastes like chocolate (the exact amount is down to preference).
  • Add the nuts and blend again, adding the flax and chia as you go.
  • At this point it’s possible to add some oats. Again the amount can vary.
  • Press into a rectangular tray and cut the individual bars.
  • Leave in the fridge overnight to set.
  • Once you’ve cut the bars, you can cover them in shredded coconut. It tastes great and helps make them less sticky and easier to unwrap and eat.
