The breeze is our constant companion on the bike; mostly our enemy, especially at this time of year. However, while there's nothing we can do to avoid the wind when it's blowing and we're on the open roads, we can take the best approach possible.
Through a combination of choosing the right kit - especially wheels - and clothing, not to mention getting as much shelter as we can in a group and planning our routes with wind direction in mind, we can ready ourself for very breezy conditions.
GCN has put together this video, above, with some tips about riding in the wind, and being as sensible and strategic as we can - including doing our longest turns on the front during a group ride on tailwind sections, nice!
The tips cover areas like:
- Choice of wheels
- What type of clothing to wear
- Knowing the direction of the breeze to plan route
- Positioning on road and behind training partners
- How to sit on the bike to be most aero
This video won't spare you from the punishing wins of Ireland in winter, but at least you pick up a few tips to help you cope a little better.
