Lydia Boylan has finished a fine 6th in the opening round of the Matrix Fitness Grand Prix Series in Motherwell, Scotland.

The six-race series is essentially the same as the men’s Pearl Izumi Tour Series which sees the best UK-based teams do battle over nine races, with the winner the rider with the most points accrued over those events.

The women’s series is the same format, just three events less.

Last night Boylan, along with Josie Knight and Eileen Burns – both guesting for Sunsport Velo – and Lauren Creamer (Podium Ambition)  were in action.

Eleven teams did battle around the closed-street circuit which saw the peloton race for 45 minutes before the men’s event.

The 11 teams riding were Aprire HSS Hire, Drops Racing Team, Boot Out Breast Cancer, Podium Ambition pb Club La Santa, Sunsport Velo, Team Breeze, Team Footon Velosport, Team Ford EcoBoost, Team Jadan Weldtite, Team WNT and Velo Schils Interbike.

Boylan, after a good showing at the Lincoln GP at the weekend, was active all night and stayed with the lead group over the 24-lap event.

However, she couldn’t match the finishing speed of winner Eileen Roe (Lares Waowdeals).

Just 21 riders finished on the same lap as the winner. Boylan was 6th, just eight seconds behind Roe.

Creamer came home in 9th place, just two seconds behind Boylan.

Knight and Burns were four laps further back, in 30th and 42nd place respectively.

ITV4 will show highlights of both the men’s and the women’s races in the coming days and they will also be available on ITV Player for 30 days after the first screening.

The remaining rounds in the women’s series are; Round Two – Thursday 26th May – Redditch; Round Three – Thursday 2nd June – Stoke-on-Trent; Round Four – Monday 6th June – Stevenage; Round Five – Tuesday 7th June – Croydon; Round Six – Thursday 9th June – Portsmouth.
