Shenna McKiverigan was the star of the show at the National Junior Track Championships at the weekend as she took home four gold medals and set a national record for the 200-metre TT.

The 17 year-old Powerhouse Sport rider was victorious in the scratch race, sprint, 1k time-trial and the 2k pursuit.

Though she was certainly the best rider on the day, she was pushed all the way by Shauna McFadden (NRPT-Magnet.ie), Nicole Gorry (Lakeside Wheelers CC) and Eimear Harrison (Westport Covey Wheelers) in each event.

Gorry came within two seconds of winning the 2k time-trial but her time of 2:59 was only bettered by Gilford girl McKiverigan (2:57)

In the men’s events, Luke Smith (NRPT-Magnet.ie) helped himself to two gold medals in the scratch and 1k time-trial, while he also took silver in the 3k pursuit and bronze in the sprint.

Smith is only a first-year junior so his performances certainly auger well for the season ahead.

And they should give national junior coach Frank O’Leary plenty to ponder ahead of the season’s key events.

The Cavan man was particularly convincing in winning the scratch race from teammate Marc Heaney with recently-crowned Gorey Three-Day winner Robert O’leary picking up bronze.

The winners from the two other events were Harvey Barnes (East Tyrone CC) and Xeno Young (Powerhouse Sport).

Barnes showed his talent in the gallop when he pipped Young and Smith but Young took some revenge when he put in a storming effort in the 3k pursuit.

Seven of those who started the latter event broke four minutes with Young clocking 3:47, five seconds faster than the next man.
