Mark Downey’s cycling medals look very impressive all in one photo. And this haul is from just the last seven months of competition.

Out of the Banbridge CC stable, Downey has really broken through in the last few months, first claiming a medal at U23 level in the European Track Championships last July.

He then followed that up with a gold medal in the points race at the UCI World Cup in Apeldoorn, Holland, in November.

And then another points race gold and a Madison silver medal followed at the UCI World Cup in Cali, Colombia, last month.

And just last weekend Downey scored an incredible hat trick; taking his third gold medal in as many UCI World Cups.

This time he claimed gold in the Madison with partner Felix English.

Incredible medals record

That brought his tally of medals at major international track meetings to six in just seven months.

That’s an incredible record for young Downey, who is still only 20-years-old and is a dual road and track rider.

And when one considers Ireland is a small country in world cycling with no velodrome, his achievements to date are quite incredible.

And let’s not forget Downey in 2014 took a scratch race silver medal at junior level, below, in the European Track Championships.

So that’s seven major medals already for him.

Downey now goes on to the World Championships in LA in April for of confidence and very hopeful of more success, though not taking anything for granted at that level.

And after those Worlds are over, he will go to France to continue his pursuit of a top road career.

Downey will ride for CC Etupes, having already performed very well on the road in France and for Ireland last year.
