Mark Downey and Felix English have made history overnight by becoming the first pairing from Ireland to win a gold medal in the Madison at the UCI Track World Cup.

The dynamic duo took the spoils at the end of a thrilling race in Los Angeles last evening, fending off stiff competition from 12 other countries.

Denmark had to be content with the silver medal this time in a reversal of fortunes from the last round of the World Cup in Cali while taking the bronze were New Zealand.

Downey and English amassed 57 points, 12 more than their nearest challengers who were one point ahead of the Kiwis.

The 30—kilometre, 120-lap contest featured 12 sprints and it was run off at an eye-watering speed of 55kph.

The men in green needed to be vigilant throughout and over the course of the contest which was done and dusted in just over 32 minutes they were first over the line on three occasions.

It was the final round of the World Cups and their next stop is the UCI World Championships in Hong Kong in April (12-16th).
